You've asked for it, we delivered. It may be a weird concept for a top 10 channel to promote their "competition", but hey, we always give credit where credit is due. In this installment, we're going to count down our top 10 pick of our favorite list channels on YouTube.
Matthew Santoro needs little introduction at this point. His enthusiasm is refreshing, the knowledge he provides isn’t typical “copy and paste” facts from a 30-year-old textbook, and his personality is one that is hard to dislike. It’s tough to decide whether it’s his bright and outgoing personality or his videos’ unforgiving “in your face” format that makes his channel so addicting, but clearly he’s doing something right to break over 1 million views in just about every video. We’d say 1/3 of his audience is subscribed because of his teeth. I mean, come on, look at those pearly whites.. I mean, how does he do that!? All joking aside, if Hollywood were to make a movie on a YouTube success story, it’d likely be on Matthew Santoro. After winning a Streamy Award in 2015 for “Breakout Creator”, for essentially having the most explosive subscriber growth throughout the year , and also flying to South Africa for a roll in the movie, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, there seems to be very few things left on Santoro’s bucketlist of accomplishments.
The predominant nose of Australian Danger Dolan is not the only stand-out feature of this popular YouTube list channel. These quick 5 to 10 minute informational videos pull few punches to ensure viewers are constantly learning something new. From entertainment to crime to nature and science, Dolan covers a broad spectrum of topics, which may have helped his exponential growth of over 3 million subscribes in a little less than 2 years. Although hard work is inevitably the key component to Dolan’s success, we can’t help but wonder how much impact these click bait thumnails have.. I mean, come on! You just have to click on these! Accompanying Dolan’s clever videos is a website that offers abridged lists with easy to read bullet points.
Since 2010, Britain-based AllTime10s has delivered quality content to YouTube, engaging viewers over a range of topics. The crew at AllTime10s doesn’t limit itself to two or three topics, rather expanding itself into a universe of, well whatever topic tickles your fancy. Ever wonder what the deadliest street drugs were or what shocking facts Coca-Cola has hidden in its closet? AllTime10s has you covered, stopping at seemingly nothing to put forth quality, viral content that doesn’t even need a clickbait photo. The duo of hosts, Dave and John, even engage in the occasional fact battle, where the two attempt to out do one another in the ultimate fact finding challenge. We think Dave usually wins..
It touts itself as the “best channel to binge watch on list videos about shocking, controversial, mysterious, funny, weird, and mind-blowing facts,” and with videos like Creepiest Creatures Terrifying Kids Around the World, Youngest Parents in the World, and 10 Teachers Behaving Badly, it may not be far from the truth. TheRichest features a female host – a trait otherwise absent in the 10 best list channels – a flashy intro, and a range of well-researched topics to pass the hours with. The channel’s 2014 start was a bit different than its current form, with upbeat music filling in the host-less void for the first few videos. As it grew, TheRichest solidified its style into the successful channel it’s known as today.
It’s difficult to talk about list channels and not mention WatchMojo. Mojo is far from your one-man production, claiming over 100 freelance writers and researchers making up much of the fact-finding behind the scenes. According to their wikipedia page, WatchMojo currently employs 23 full-time workers, and is currently the largest YouTube channel based out of Canada. A heavy focus on pop culture deviates WatchMojo from much of the list world, with topics sticking more within gaming, film, and television. Though WatchMojo’s YouTube presence didn’t start until 2007, the company was actually founded in 2005 by Ashkan Karbasfrooshan, Christine Voulieris, and Raphael Daigneault with a website launched a year later. In 2015, WatchMojo both entered the top 50 most subscribed YouTube channels and won an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.
Laugh. Fear. Rob Dyke has two main principals that he sticks to in order to captivate his audience every Wednesday and Friday. Dyke started like many YouTubers these days – at the bottom with low budget videos of him in a nondescript environment talking about a variety of topics. Not long after his 2012 start, Rob tightened and perfected his image and increased his production budget, a change that both his YouTube audience demanded, but were also able to provide him with the revenue to make it a reality. The channel follows a formula of posting a comedic video on Fridays and a scary video every Wednesday and with views often in the 6 and 7 digits, it’s a formula that clearly works. Viewers that can’t get enough Rob can also check out his gaming and vlogging channels, Zombie Horse, Internet Pariah, and also on collaborating channels such as Matthew Santoro.
Top 5 Unknowns
An entire channel devoted to the unknown is sure to garner a huge following, but what Top 5 Unknowns does is combine the unknown with the known that we wish we didn’t know, but we certainly know now, even though we didn’t want to know, because of Top 5 Unknowns.. did I just make any sense? One moment we’re enthralled by the 5 Most Haunted Hotels in the World and in the next, we’re cowering while listening to 5 Creepy Home Invasion Stories. It’s a good balance of the paranormal and the mysterious with real, terrifying stories of death and murder that only the internet could deem as entertainment. Top 5 Unknowns hit the YouTube market in June of 2014 with 5 Things You Won’t Believe About China.
Who is LEMMiNO? Outside of being another pretty-faced public figure on Facebook, he’s a hard working musician, YouTuber, Animator, and self-proclaimed Human Bean; but if you’re here, chances are you know him as the mind behind Top10Memes, a Swedish-based channel started in 2012 that pulls heavily from user-suggestions for new ideas. Covering a range of topics from science to gaming to television to… well.. almost literally anything, Top10Memes has a soothing nature and knack for viral topics that warrants the over 1 million subscribers the channel has. One of its more entertaining segments is the Top 10 Rage Comics episodes, which combine the very best of internet rage in meme comic form.
A whimsical channel dishing out information on the paranormal, UFOs, the supernatural, and mythology is sure to have quite the following, as seen specifically with Top5s. The nameless host and channel owner tells five fresh and often unique stories of mystique or science in a new video every week, allowing his viewers time to dwell and think on each topic before being launched into a new mind-boggling video. A mix of well-researched facts and a soothing accent make Top5s videos a pleasure to view and certainly explain the impressive growth from its inception in July of 2014.
Some YouTubers are simply in it for the fame, shelling out click bait videos just for the views; but not Simon Whistler and his partner Shell Harris from TopTenzNet. Instead, Simon aims to inform, and with a jovial style and a different color button up shirt in each video, inform he does. Covering ground breaking topics like Mistakes Hitler Made and Money Making Schemes That Work. Simon not only intrigues and captivates a hefty audience, but he does it by always staying original and covering controversial topics that other list channels won’t touch. Launched in February of 2010, TopTenzNet climbed the ranks steadily, eventually finding themselves mentioned on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
